I started a publishing company
Last week marked a pivotal moment in my self-publishing adventure – the creation of my very own publishing company, C&F Alpine Publishing. Now, I know, not every self-publisher takes this approach, but trust me, there's a reason to do this.
Let's take a stroll through the twists and turns of self-publishing, where I share what I’ve learned in this process:
Understanding ISBNs and Their Role:
Every book is assigned a unique ISBN (International Standard Book Number), specific to its size and cover.
Distinct ISBNs for paperback and hardcover versions ensure accurate identification. So if I publish a paperback and hardcover, that’s two ISBN numbers.
Key Players in Self-Publishing/Print on Demand:
Amazon and Ingram Spark are the platforms I plan on using. They will both print and distribute my book when purchased. No post office visits for me.
While Amazon needs no introduction, Ingram Spark serves as the primary supplier for libraries and bookstores beyond Amazon’s reach.
If you want your book available anywhere outside Amazon, a company like Ingram Spark is how it’s done.
The ISBN Dilemma:
Both Amazon and Ingram Spark offer free ISBNs, but they cannot be used interchangeably across platforms.
Using free ISBNs creates the perception of two separate books. This could mean two separate listings in bookstores/online.
Free ISBNs often label books as "independently published.”Unfortunately, there is still a stigma around self published books and they tend to perform lesser than traditionally published books.
Why Invest in My Own ISBN:
Opting for personal ISBNs ensures consistency across various printers and distributors. Enshrine one listing across all commerce.
A purchased ISBN allows customization of the publisher's name, mitigating the stigma associated with self-published books.
As for that publisher’s name, I chose to register a DBA (Doing Business As) in my state. It was easy to do in Montana through their online form and costs only $35.
When I buy my ISBN, it’ll be in my business's name, establishing it as the publisher when "Betrayed in the Wild" hits the shelves.
Spring2024. That’s when it will hit the shelves.
